Meet an Alumni – Brooke B

We are so thankful for Brooke sharing her memories at the Clubs. She had so many to share from going to the Club in the 90’s, check it out!

“I can’t say I have one single favorite memory, there were just so many good ones. From going deep-sea fishing, being named Youth of the Week, and winning multiple gold medals in volleyball and basketball, to taking part in drawing or essay contests, joining the short-lived garden club (I still remember making the sign for it!), and taking drawing classes, it was all so fulfilling. I even remember Larry in the teen center teaching music; I can still play the drums because of him.
The old-school jungle gym with the net was another favorite, it was so much fun to climb, even if it was probably a little dangerous. It just wasn’t the same after they “upgraded” it.
There were so many amazing staff members who truly made a difference in my life. Jim, Forest, and Jon always made me feel important and valued. Josh inspired my creativity through drawing classes. Lydia, who’s still a family friend to this day, was such a positive presence. And then there was Mandy (or maybe Mindy?), the kind lady from the teen center. I also remember an Elijah, and one year I even got to help with the haunted house walkthrough, which was pretty epic.
Growing up with a single mother, I think I leaned on the male staff members a lot for that sense of acceptance I didn’t have from my father. Every person who worked there played such an important role. The acceptance and influence they offered to kids like me were incredible. I’m beyond grateful for all the experiences I had there—the friendships I made, the lessons I learned, and the countless memories that still mean so much to me today.” – Brooke B. 2025
