From Player to Leader: John Eppstein’s Lifelong Connection to the Club
For BGCEC alumni John Eppstein, the Club was more than just a place to spend time after school. It was a foundation for friendship, growth, and a lifelong commitment to community.
As a kid, John was drawn to the Club for its energy and sense of belonging. He spent his afternoons playing soccer and basketball in leagues organized by the Club, where he found not only a safe place to go, but a vibrant environment filled with fun and connection. It was a space where kids could simply be kids, active, social, and supported.
One of John’s favorite memories takes him back to the basketball court at Santana High School’s gym. The excitement of the games, the sound of cheering spectators, and the glow of the scoreboard created an atmosphere that made every moment feel important. Beyond the competition, it was the camaraderie, meeting kids from other teams and sharing in the thrill of the game, that made those experiences unforgettable.
Through those years, John gained lessons that would stay with him for life. Teamwork and sportsmanship were not just words. They were values lived out daily on the court and carried far beyond it.
When asked to describe what the Club meant to him as a child, John summed it up simply: fun, safe, exciting. Those three words capture the essence of what the Club provided, not just for him, but for so many young people.
While John does not point to a single mentor, he remembers the staff as a whole making a lasting impact. They created an environment that was welcoming and supportive, always prioritizing both safety and fun. Their influence helped shape the positive experiences that kept kids like John coming back day after day.
That impact did not end when John grew up. In fact, it came full circle. The meaningful memories he built at the Club inspired him to reconnect later in life, joining the board in his early 30s. Today, he has dedicated over 25 years to working with the same Clubs he once attended as a child. This is an enduring testament to the power of those early experiences.
For John’s family, the Club also provided peace of mind. It was a place his parents trusted, a structured, positive alternative to simply being out on the streets. That sense of security made a difference not only for him, but for his entire family.
John Eppstein’s story is a powerful reminder that the impact of the Club does not fade with time. It grows. From after-school games to decades of leadership, his journey reflects what is possible when young people are given a safe place to learn, play, and belong.
