Giving from Your DAF

A Flexible Way to Support the Causes You Care About

Donor advised funds (DAFs) offer a meaningful and tax-wise way to support organizations with missions that matter to you, like the Boys and Girls Clubs of East County Foundation. With a donoradvised fund, you can recommend grants that support your values and make a positive impact on the lives of children and youth in the east region of San Diego County.

Because donor advised funds are flexible and offer potential tax benefits, many donors use DAFs to simplify their charitable giving. DAFs may also help families engage children and grandchildren in charitable decisions and foster a lasting tradition of community involvement.

  1. First, you establish a donor advised fund through a sponsoring organization, such as a community foundation, like the Silicon Valley Community Foundation or other DAF administrators, or a financial institution.
  1. Next, you contribute assets, such as cash, appreciated securities or other qualified assets to the fund.
  1. You receive potential tax benefits. Contributions are generally tax-deductible in the year the gift is made, subject to applicable IRS limits.
  1. Then, you can begin recommending grants.  At any time, you may recommend grants from your donor advised fund to support your nonprofit organization of choice.
  1. Create your charitable legacy. If you choose, you may also recommend recurring grants or designate the Boys and Girls Clubs of East County Foundation as a beneficiary of your donor advised fund after your lifetime.
  • With a donor advised fund, you can organize your charitable giving through a single, convenient account.
  • You may contribute assets in years when additional tax deductions are especially beneficial and recommend grants later, when you are ready.
  • Perhaps you have recently sold stock or other assets that will result in taxes being owed. You may wish to establish a DAF and claim an itemized charitable deduction to offset or minimize taxes for the year.
  • Many families use donor advised funds to involve children and grandchildren in charitable giving decisions and to encourage a lifelong commitment to improving the world around them.
  • Many donor advised fund providers allow you to designate charitable beneficiaries to receive all or a portion of the remaining fund balance after your lifetime. This can be a simple and meaningful way to support the Boys and Girls Clubs of East County Foundation for generations to come.
  • Because donor advised funds pass through beneficiary designations rather than through your will, it is important to review your charitable plans regularly to ensure they continue to reflect your current wishes.

Please let us know when you make a grant recommendation so we can thank you properly and keep you informed about the impact of your generosity.
